1. Does the child sit with their back fully against the vehicle seat?

The child should not need to slide forward to bend their knees.

2. Do the child’s knees bend naturally at the edge of the seat?

The child should be able to remain upright without slouching or scooting forward.

3. Does the lap belt lie low and snug across the upper thighs?

It should not ride up across the soft stomach area.

4. Does the shoulder belt cross the center of the shoulder and chest?

It should not touch the neck, cross the face, or fall off the shoulder.

5. Can the child maintain this position for the entire ride?

No leaning, slouching, placing the shoulder belt behind the back, or putting it under the arm.

Does this seating position have both a lap and shoulder belt?

A booster must be used with a lap-and-shoulder belt, not a lap-only belt.

Is the belt flat, untwisted, and able to retract snugly?

The belt should not be routed under the arm or behind the child’s back.

Is the child’s head supported by the vehicle seat or head restraint?

This is especially important when considering a backless booster.

Have you repeated the belt-fit check in every vehicle the child regularly rides in?

Passing in one vehicle does not mean the belt will fit in another.
